Farnham URC receives eco-congregation award

20th August 2011

Following a year of activities by the church, including bird and bug box building by the youth group, and a Garden Event on 16th June, two independent assessors visited the church on 20th August.  This visit was by no means a matter of ticking the boxes and an automatic award: all aspects of the church’s life were discussed and much encouragement given.  The assessors were most impressed — and very encouraging — and recommended the church for the Eco-congregation Award.

When the award came it was unqualified, much to the delight of all concerned.  The award plaque was presented to the church by The Reverend Clare Downing, Moderator of the Wessex Synod of the United Reformed Church, during morning service on 16th September.  Prayers were said at the presentation for all churches undertaking the Eco-congregation initiative.

The church’s eco journey does not end here as the award is for three years.  During that time, more eco initiatives will be undertaken, and plans are already being made for the next steps.
