An opportunity to renew our covenant relationship with God

"In this covenant God promises us new life in Christ. For our part we promise to live no longer for ourselves but for God."

The Covenant Service

Is one of the Methodist Church's greatest acts of renewal which they happily share with other Christians. The service itself has a rich tradition: On the twenty-fifth December 1747, John Wesley who founded a society within the Church of England, whose members were nicknamed ‘Methodists', wrote in his journal: "Both this and the following days I strongly urge the giving up of ourselves to God and renewing in every point our covenant that the Lord should be our God."
The  Covenant Service , is at the heart of Methodists' devotion and discipleship, and their dedication in working for social justice in the community. In the service the Church joyfully celebrates God's gracious offer to Israel that "I will be their God and they shall be my people". In it
we are especially challenged to renew our desire to maintain a relationship of love and trust between God and ourselves - a kind of spiritual New Year's resolution.
In recent times, many other churches have discovered the beauty of this act of worship and of the words of renewal at its very centre as we start a New Year.
